Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water (1974 California Jam) - Rock Fans

Live at the California Jam 6th April 1974 at the Ontario Speedway Los Angeles.

California Jamming is a live album by British hard rock band Deep Purple, recorded in 1974 and originally released in 1996, it was re-released as a remastered edition in 2003 with the complete concert including the missing track "Lay Down, Stay Down".

The album is a live recording of Deep Purple's infamous appearance at the California Jam Festival on 6 April 1974, which was televised by ABC-TV in prime time. It was one of the first to feature their third line-up, which included vocalist David Coverdale and bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes. At the end of the show, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore first attacked one of the network's video cameras (which had been getting between him and the audience) with his guitar, and then had his amplifiers doused with gasoline and set on fire, which caused an explosion.

Most of this concert was broadcast over 4 weekends in April 1974 on KLOS-FM ABC-TV Stereo Simulcast, along with other California Jam artists.

"Smoke On The Water"

We all came out to Montreux On the Lake Geneva shoreline To make records with a mobile We didn't have much time Frank Zappa and the Mothers Were at the best place around But some stupid with a flare gun Burned the place to the ground Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky Smoke on the water They burned down the gambling house It died with an awful sound Funky Claude was running in and out Pulling kids out the ground When it all was over We had to find another place But Swiss time was running out It seemed that we would lose the race Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky Smoke on the water We ended up at the Grand Hotel It was empty, cold and bare But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside Making our music there With a few red lights and a few old beds We made a place to sweat No matter what we get out of this I know, I know we'll never forget Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky Smoke on the water
